- MORE: Coast Guard rescues man who went overboard on Carnival cruise ship

The Liberty of the Seas departed from South Florida and was 57 miles from Great Inagua in The Bahamas when the passenger went overboard. Barnett, who had two twin girls, isn't the first cruise passenger to go overboard this year. Barnett's mother, Elisha Reid, told BI she doesn't believe he jumped, and after reviewing security footage, she thinks he slipped. The Coast Guard is using air and water assets to search for the passenger.

A cruise turned into a nightmare for people aboard Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas when a young man jumped overboard shortly after 4 a.m. Levion Parker, 20, was identified by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. He has been missing since he jumped overboard on April 4 in front of his brother and father on the cruise to Cuba and the Bahamas. The 22-year-old man was a passenger on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas when, due to unknown reasons; he ended up in the water. That’s when passengers aboard the Disney Magic ship saw him and alerted the ship’s crew.

On Wednesday, just two days after Barnett's disappearance, the Coast Guard began its search for a 30-year-old who went overboard from an MSC cruise ship. Lupoli said the Coast Guard released the ship from the search efforts and it continued to Port Canaveral. Matt Lupoli, a spokesperson for Carnival, told CBS News that the man was at a bar with his sister on Wednesday night, and he disappeared after leaving to use the restroom. His sister, whose identity has also not been made public, alerted crew to his absence when he did not return to his stateroom overnight. The cruise ship has 18 decks and can accommodate up to 3,634 passengers.

A passenger who fell off a cruise ship late Wednesday night was rescued on Thursday evening. "We greatly appreciate the efforts of all, most especially the U.S. Coast Guard and the mariner who spotted the guest in the water," the Coast Guard said in a statement Thursday to ABC News. The Cruiseman is a travel agency acting as an intermediary or agent for suppliers, such as air carriers, cruise lines, hotels, tour operators, ground transportation companies, and other independent firms. The rescue sheds light on safety issues and whether ships should have technology that detects when someone on the ship goes overboard. Maritime attorney Jim Walker told Florida Today that this accident enforces his belief that ships need motion sensors and thermal detection systems that would indicate if someone goes overboard. According to a CLIA report, only 28.2% of passengers who fell overboard between 2009 and 2019 were successfully rescued.
The two were last seen together at a restaurant where Grimes had won an air guitar contest before going to the bathroom. In the past few years, most cruise lines have enacted onboard safety measures and surveillance systems to help reduce the risk of overboard deaths. “There was a lot of yelling, and the crew was alerted immediately,” another passenger, Deborah Morrison, told The Post.

"We are beyond grateful that this case ended with a positive outcome," said Lt. Seth Gross, a Sector New Orleans search and rescue mission coordinator. The cruise ship was released by the Coast Guard from search and rescue efforts and will continue its way to Norfolk, Virginia, where it's scheduled to arrive Tuesday. When a passenger on a Royal Caribbean cruise recently fell overboard it wasn’t his own cruise ship that rescued him. The crew of a Disney cruise line that just happened to be passing by actually fished him out of the water. The Coast Guard is searching for a 35-year-old man who fell overboard while on a Carnival cruise ship near Florida on Monday, according to a statement.

The man jumped from the Carnival Cruise Lines ship Mardi Gras just after midnight about 55 miles (89 kilometers) east of Port Canaveral, according to the Coast Guard and Carnival. The US Coast Guard announced on Thursday that it called off its search for a man who went overboard from a Carnival Glory cruise in the Gulf of Mexico earlier this week. "The Carnival Care Team is supporting the guest's family. Mardi Gras," said Carnival spokesman Matt Lupoli. The man jumped from the Carnival Cruise Line ship Mardi Gras just after midnight about 55 miles east of Port Canaveral, according to the Coast Guard and Carnival. "The Carnival Care Team is providing support to the guest’s companion and traveling party who are on board," Carnival said.
Deborah Morrison, another passenger on board the cruise, told the Post that "there was a lot of yelling and that the crew was alerted immediately." "Our crews battled severe weather conditions for multiple days and made every effort to find Mr. Barnett. Suspending an active search is never a decision we make lightly, and we offer our most sincere condolences to Mr. Barnett's family and friends." CBS Miami reported the Mardi Gras is the largest ship ever built for the cruise line.

The first cruise ship with an onboard roller coaster, the Mardi Gras is 1,130 feet long, has 21 decks, 2,641 staterooms, and features six themed zones and restaurants from Guy Fieri, Emeril Lagasse, Rudi Sodamin and Shaquille O'Neal. The Coast Guard responded with two cutters and an airplane to search for the 43-year-old man. The Mardi Gras and the cruise ship Elation also participated in the search, said Coast Guard spokesman David Micallef. The man was a passenger on the Carnival Magic cruise ship, which was about 186 miles east of Jacksonville when he fell into the water. LA FAYETTE, ALABAMA -- James Michael Grimes is speaking out for the first time in an exclusive interview with ABC News after going overboard on a Carnival cruise ship after being missing for almost 20 hours. According to the Washington Post, about 386 people were reported to have gone overboard on the major cruise lines between 2000 to 2020.
Royal Caribbean confirmed that a passenger, whose identity has not been revealed, went overboard near The Bahamas at about 4 a.m. As Business Insider previously reported, surveillance footage viewed by the ship's security team appeared to show Barnett jumping from Deck 4 after midnight on Monday. According to the Coast Guard's statement, inclement weather made the search more difficult. Crews reportedly faced "8-foot to 12-foot seas, limited visibility, and gale force winds" while searching for Barnett. Carnival's Care Team is "providing support to the family members of the missing guest who were sailing with him and remain on board," Lupoli said. Grimes had only been aboard the Carnival Valor for a day before his sister reported him missing.
"The ship's crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the US Coast Guard, who has taken over the search," the Royal Caribbean spokesperson said. "The Coast Guard launched multiple search and rescue assets as soon as we were notified of a missing passenger from the Carnival Glory," Lieutenant Commander Sean DiGeorge, the search and rescue mission coordinator, said in the statement. Grimes was aboard the five-day cruise with 18 of his family members for Thanksgiving. When he didn't return to his cabin that night, his sister reported him missing.
In December, an MSC Cruises passenger jumped from one of its ships while sailing from Europe to South America. The chances of falling overboard on a cruise ship are extremely low. According to its statement, the Coast Guard suspended its mission after searching 5,625 square miles, an area roughly the size of Connecticut.
